Facebook Wants to Be on Your Dumbphone

App That Runs on Any Phone

While Facebook certainly has been able to expand its reach with its smartphone applications, a signficant portion remains - a majority in fact - the mobile phone users who do not have a smartphone, or perhaps even desired. The social networking giant seems determined to preserve themselves from those consumers.

facebook

In cooperation with Snaptu, a company that specializes in developing applications for a scaled using so-called "dumb phones" has a Facebook application that runs on about 2500 machines a number of manufacturers launched, including Nokia, Sony Ericsson and LG . It will provide an experience similar to that of his counterpart, amateur phone.

facebook

It seems that the focus (at least initially) to expand the mobile use of the site in developing markets. Facebook has reached agreements with several airlines in Asia, Europe and the Dominican Republic, the use of the application for 90 days without charges for data transfer.

facebook

Facebook plans to move the application to other airlines worldwide in the coming months, "he said. The offer is a bit like" Zero "is free to use on the website at a low bandwidth, as the company last year.

facebook

A warning if you get files Snaptu in an attempt to Facebook when you are on a carrier launch, it will not work (if you incur for data transfer or not pay). It is not clear whether this restriction is lifted. Snaptu still has its own unofficial applications that is similar to the official on TechCrunch.

Facebook Teams With Snaptu To Launch Rich App For Feature Phones

Facebook has proven extremely popular on smartphones: These are the most downloaded applications ever on the iPhone and probably holds the record on Android, too. But the user experience for mobile functionality itself, which still represent the vast majority of mobile phone use worldwide, has not been as rich - users tend to light m.facebook.com Facebook page , called the work but do not really feel an "App". Today, things are changing.

Facebook has just introduced a new application for mobile functionality, developed in collaboration with Snaptu announced. According to the announcement of Facebook application will work over 2,500 device models from people like Nokia, Sony Ericsson and LG. Using a home screen similar to the visible appearance on the iPhone and Android, and notes that Facebook also support contact synchronization, and scroll faster status updates and photos.

If you use the function of a compatible phone, you can download it directly here. To launch the new application for users (and dependence), Facebook has 14 mobile operators worldwide to access the application data free for 90 days to propose a partnership. This is likely to lead to a significant increase in mobile usage for users of this function mobile phone, particularly if airlines Facebook to help spread the word.

Facebook has launched an initiative called Facebook different mobile Zero as a lightweight version of the website provides users of some international carriers, it's free.

Update: I just spoke with the CEO Ran Makavy Snaptu Moissinac and Henry, the manager of Facebook Mobile, which has shared some additional details.

The relationship between Snaptu and Facebook is not addressed (for example, they do not say how much money changed hands as part of their partnership, if they wanted to say no ads are shown in the application). They say that the relationship is long term Snaptu continue to improve the application.

You can ask if you're on a supported media - even if you're willing to pay for your own data, the application does not work when you are on a support are not supported. It seems that Facebook these exclusive carrier partners offered to sweeten the deal, but he can change things down the line. Makavy emphasizes that even if you do not receive the official Facebook application can not, you can always download Snaptu (and invite their Facebook application of sound), which is very similar.

The free 90-day window starts today, not when the user is the first application.

Facebook has found that major obstacles had to-phone users prices and a lack of certain features on m.facebook.com. Facebook zero is intended to help the first problem, this application allows it (and Moissinac said that with less data m.facebook.com, it is also much cheaper).

Facebook Amends Rules For Access To Phone

let Facebook apps access users' home addresses and mobile phone numbers

Demonstrating again that this really did not understand privacy concerns, Facebook developers said on Friday that Facebook apps now they can ask their permission to users home addresses and mobile numbers.

Facebook

The company has this information available to developers through the user object in his Chart API, reminding developers that use Facebook data by company policy Platform ruled. In theory, there is no privacy problem, because users must authorize all requested information to Facebook in the data and because each app is designed to use Facebook data appropriately.

Facebook

But that is not how the users situation. Comments have been posted to Facebook developer blog se the decision was overwhelmingly negative.

Facebook

"Both the developer and user perspective, I find it a little disconcerting," wrote Facebook user David C. Dean in'n reactions. "To preface, I think it's fair to say that it is terribly convoluted privacy settings within Facebook is foreign territory to most users it is just. to Facebook to use the features it offers on the surface, and I hope of a doubt this will change in the near future. "

Dean said that as a developer, would be better to directly address and telephone request for information, rather than relying on the fact that Facebook users are trained to click when presented with a dialog for permissions.

Facebook

Although some of them commented to say that consumers should be protected from their ignorance about privacy issues, some say that if users agree to release their information, that's their problem.

Facebook

Faced with the most negative feedback, contact backpedaled a bit. It is still value in providing developers access to the address and phone number, which is useful for the goods will be ordered online. But the company plans to revise the application to ensure that even users who are most click-happy to understand what he agreed to when presented with requests for the address and phone.

"Over the weekend, we had some useful feedback that might make people more clearly aware of when providing access to this information," said Director of Developer Relations Douglas Purdy up on blog posts. "We agree, and we make changes to help share this information only if you intend to do that assurance."

Facebook

The company said it would disable access to the address and telephone until the change notification process was introduced.

Facebook

Does this change was to calm remains to be seen. However, Sophos senior technology consultant Graham Cluley said that the decision to use social networking services will be dangerous. Up, he argues, is plagued by spam-user application with unwanted comments and wall directs users to participate in electoral fraud dangerous.

Facebook has allowed developers access to your basic information on the "Info" tab if you choose to share it when adding an application to your Facebook page. www.IDTheftSecurity.com
